History Of Istanbul Modern Art Museum
The seeds of Istanbul Modern were laid in 1987, at the 1st International Contemporary Art Exhibitions, today’s International Istanbul Biennial. Inspired by the interest and dynamism the exhibition brought to the Istanbul art scene, Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı took action to establish a permanent modern art museum in Istanbul.
After a long search, Feshane, which was an industrial area in the 19th century, was transformed into a contemporary art museum. The building hosted the 3rd Istanbul Biennial in 1991, but the long-term project could not be realized. Since then, many projects have been attempted to realize the idea of a modern art museum in Istanbul, but the attempts failed because a suitable place could not be found or the main collection could not be created.
The fate of the project changed again in 2003, after the 8th Istanbul Biennial used the number four customs warehouse next to the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts Academy as its main venue.
When Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan approved the permanent use of the space, the main obstacle to the museum project was removed.
T.R. Built as a dry cargo warehouse for Maritime Operations, the 8000 m2 building was transformed into a fully equipped, modern museum by Tabanlıoğlu Architecture.
The area of the Bosphorus surrounding the Golden Horn has served as a natural port for thousands of years, connecting the city with other trade and cultural centers around the world.
In the 13th century, various Latin colonies began to establish ports in this region. One of them was the Genoese port that created the Galata region, where the Tophane neighborhood is located. By the 17th century, Tophane docks had become the main port for ships coming from Europe.
At first, each shipping company had a separate buoy to anchor their ships, and a separate paddle set that landed goods and passengers. This system became inadequate as the transportation traffic and the number of passengers increased, and in 1879 docks began to be built along the coast.
Warehouses and hangars were built on the docks in 1910. With the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the docks, in 1984, Turkey Maritime Shipping and Ports area Property name was given to Business Management.
The current building was built as a warehouse during the arrangement of Tophane Square in 1957-58 under the direction of the famous architect Sedad Hakkı Eldem. The pier was used as Istanbul’s main port until 1990 and today it continues to accommodate many commercial and cruise ships.
