After the Grand Canyon in Arizona State, Cehennem Deresi Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world, awaits its visitors with its fascinating beauty. We have to say that you can not take your camera with you for a moment in this canyon, the road of which everyone who falls to Artvin will definitely want to see. Because as you progress through the canyon, you will want to immortalize the view you will encounter.

Where is Cehennem Deresi Canyon?

Cehennem Deresi Canyon, which is one of the few canyons in the world, is within the borders of Ardanuç district of our Artvin city, which attracts attention with its magnificent nature. This canyon, which is 34 kilometers from Artvin city center and 4 kilometers from Ardanuç district; It is located on the 25th kilometer of the Artvin – Ardanuç highway, approximately 7 kilometers northwest of the district center.

Information About Cehennem Deresi Canyon

Ardanuç Cehennem Creek is a very narrow and deep valley opened by Ardanuç Water, one of the tributaries of the Çoruh River, located in the most eastern part of the Black Sea. Ardanuç Cehennem Creek, which has a slope of 90 degrees, attracts attention with its steep structure and its altitude exceeding 200 meters. The Cehennem Creek Canyon, which is located within the Ardanuç Cehennem Creek, which progresses for several kilometers, attracts the attention of tourists with its natural structure.

Cehennem Deresi Canyon, which is among the natural beauties worth seeing, is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the Arizona State of the USA. The canyon, which has an area of approximately 1068 square meters, varies between 160 and 180 meters. Cehennem Deresi Canyon, which is a 1st Degree Natural Site Area, is 500 meters long and 70 meters wide. There are many natural formation caves on the surfaces of the canyon formed by the carvings of volcanic rocks.

Cehennem Deresi Canyon, which is part of the magnificent nature of Artvin, is also a bay. You may be wondering why this natural wonder is called hell. The name of the canyon was given to hell by the local people because it is deep and steep.

Unfortunately, there is no direction sign on the road to the canyon, which does not have any touristic activities, so it becomes difficult to find the canyon. To enter this canyon, whose deepest place is higher than sea level, you need to follow some stony and steep paths. We must warn you that this route is such that even a single person can go hard. You can make noise with a stick or cymbal that you will get while passing through some intervals, snake etc. will allow animals to move away. Do not be afraid of this difficult journey, because after the journey is over, a magnificent view will welcome you.

We must regret that you will be deprived of the sky for the first 1 kilometer from the moment you enter the canyon. After passing the narrow area at the entrance, you will reach the widest part of the canyon when you proceed from the steep path. At this point, there is a bench to sit and relax. When you continue your journey after a little rest, you will reach the end of the canyon. It is said that a waterfall flows here during the rainy season.

The widest part of the canyon is also the most beautiful place. You can see different landforms here. We must say that filmmakers and photographers discovered this beauty and that they shoot from time to time. Especially in the early morning and sunset, the view can be even more impressive. There are no dining, drinking or accommodation facilities around the canyon. For this reason, you should take water and food with you before starting your trip. We recommend that you reserve at least 1 hour, wear boots and trousers and take controlled steps so that you can comfortably navigate and photograph the canyon.

The canyon, which has the potential to be one of the tourism centers of Artvin, unfortunately cannot see the attention it deserves. While 5 million people visit the grand canyon in Arizona, it is really sad that Cehennem Creek Canyon is unknown even in our country. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Artvin Governorate have started to carry out some works jointly in recent years. In this context; The Artvin First Tourism Festival, held at the Tourism Week in April 2014, was held at the Cehennem Creek Canyon. In the coming years, we hope that such activities and promotion of Cehennem Creek Canyon will continue increasingly and this natural masterpiece will be discovered by more people.
